Isn’t it about time we sent the Galway city councillors on a junket — no, not to far flung places from whence rich pickings of expenses can be plundered, but out the door of City Hall and around the Square to Prospect Hill where if they attend a meeting of their cousins in the County Council, they may be able to learn a thing or two about manners, arrogance and about how not to lose the run of themselves.

Castlebar Fine Gael Senator Paddy Burke took over the office of Cathaoirleach of the 24th Seanad this week. The Mayo Senator will lead the 60-strong house for the duration of the current government’s term. He takes over the chair from Donie Cassidy who was the Cathaoirleach of the last Seanad, during which time Sen Burke held the position of Leas Cathaoirleach. He will be the 14th leader of the Seanad since it was first established in 1922 and possibly the last if the Government goes ahead with plans to abolish the upper house.

After witnessing the elevation of his protégé, Robert Troy to the Dail last month, the 29-year political career of Castlepollard businessman Donie Cassidy ended this week in bittersweet fashion after he failed in his efforts to be returned to the 24th Senate.

The only outgoing Mayo candidate in the Seanad elections, Senator Paddy Burke, was re-elected to the 24th Seanad — and the potentially last in its current form — this week on the agricultural panel. Sen Burke was one of the 11 candidates from 28 to pick up a seat.
